Skills 101
What a skill is
A folder with a SKILL.md file in it: a name, a one-line description, and instructions. It can carry scripts, templates and reference files too.
Your agent reads only the descriptions at the start of a session. It loads the full skill when your request matches one, so fifty installed skills don’t cost you fifty skills’ worth of context.
Where they run
Claude Code and Codex both read the same SKILL.md format. Cursor and a growing list of other agents do too, so one install usually works across tools.
A repo on this list might hold one skill or a hundred. The number in each row is the repo’s stars, not a rating of every skill inside it.

Before you install
A skill runs with your agent’s permissions. Stars tell you a repo is popular, not that it’s safe.
- Read the SKILL.md and any scripts first. It’s plain text. If a skill ships code, open the code and see what it runs.
- Look for hooks and network calls. Hooks run on their own, without you asking. Be wary of anything that posts data to a server you don’t recognize.
- Don’t stack skills that do the same job. Two planning workflows or two style guides will fight over the same request, and you’ll get neither.
- Add one at a time. Use it on a real task for a day before adding the next, so you know which one changed the output.
